Selector dials index the handle across plate steps by driving spring-loaded pins into slotted plates. The steps are small — of the adjustable models in our catalog that state an increment, the figures quoted are 5 lb and 3–6 lb.
No manufacturer in this category publishes a cycle rating for the mechanism, so there is no durability number to compare across products. What actually moves when you turn the dial
Each dumbbell hides a stack of nested plates that rest in a cradle. Turning the dial rotates a cam that pushes spring-loaded pins into matching slots on the plates you want to lift. Plates below your selection stay locked to the handle; the rest stay in the cradle. Because the selection is mechanical and positive, there is no ambiguity about which plates are engaged — provided the handle is fully seated.
Magnetic-assisted designs use the same slotted-plate principle but add magnets to hold the pins in position and reduce rattle. They feel more premium and quieter, but the load path is identical: the pins, not the magnets, carry the weight.
Why the steps matter more than the max
A dumbbell that jumps from 2.5 lb increments at the bottom to an 11 lb coarse step near the top can wreck a progressive-overload plan. Smooth 2.5 lb steps let you add the smallest meaningful load; coarse steps force you to jump too far or stall. The real failure modes
- Grit ingress. Dust and chalk work into the slots over years of garage use. Sealed mechanisms shrug this off; open ones eventually gum up.
